Soil health and ecosystem services: emerging narratives and policy integration of incentive-based instruments

The NOVASOIL Project Symposium, held on the 23rd of June 2023, was a key event that highlighted the collective commitment to promoting soil health and ecosystem services. The Symposium was meticulously organised by a team of distinguished researchers from the University of Ferrara and the University of Pisa, bringing together in-depth expertise to drive this transformative initiative forward.

Opening and starting the meeting

The symposium began with a careful introduction that immersed participants in the core of NOVASOIL’s mission. Each participant was reminded of their integral role in contributing to a broader vision: the preservation and enhancement of our shared planetary home.

Italian Terroir Exhibition

Participants were taken on an intellectual journey to explore the intricacies of soil health in the context of Italian landscapes. Researchers articulated the scientific intricacies, interweaving empirical evidence with the profound implications for sustainable agricultural practices.

Narrative Influence on Agricultural Policies

The symposium explored the intersection of narrative and policy, analysing how the narratives of policy makers shape the trajectory of agricultural practices. The Communication COM (2002)179 was transformed into a saga, highlighting the nuanced balance between economic objectives, social considerations and environmental sustainability.

Roundtable on technical challenges and aspirations

In an intellectually challenging dialogue, participants addressed complex technical challenges and aspirations. The discourse moved from the limits of awareness to comprehensive educational strategies to ensure a deep understanding of the economic, social and environmental aspects of sustainable soil management.

Conclusions

The symposium concluded with a sense of purpose that underscored the human quest for technical excellence in promoting sustainable agricultural ecosystems. The NOVASOIL project symposium underscored that promoting soil health is not just a scientific endeavour, but a collective commitment to responsible stewardship of the earth.
