Business models identified

NOVASOIL has identified four main business models: Payment for Ecosystem Services, Value Chain, Carbon Credits and Collective Implementation. These models focus on benefits such as carbon sequestration, water supply and biodiversity enhancement.

Mechanisms and processes

The project focuses on understanding individual and collective actions, emphasising the importance of behavioural factors and cooperation between different actors. A combination of approaches is used to address issues such as economic incentives and institutional understanding.

Costs/Benefits

Classical economic analysis is used to assess the costs and benefits of proposed business models. Particular attention is paid to transaction and administrative costs and the importance of financial viability.

Acceptance and preferences

Acceptability refers to the willingness of stakeholders to adopt the business models. It highlights the different preferences of land users and the importance of surveys to understand business opportunities according to the behaviour of users and potential investors.

Performance/Evaluation

The project highlights the importance of evaluating the performance of business models in the context of environmental policy. Key indicators such as environmental effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, acceptability and equity will be identified.

Methodology and stakeholder engagement (Multi-actor approach)

Stakeholder engagement is key to success. Global initiatives are mentioned, such as the Soil Health Institute and SoilCares, which have developed business models in collaboration with farmers, businesses and conservation groups.

Challenges and next steps

The document highlights the importance of defining specific soil health values for different conditions and geographical areas. It also highlights the need for better coordination and cooperation on soil monitoring in Europe.

NOVASOIL is leading the way to a more sustainable and innovative agricultural as well as environmental future. We are excited about the positive impact this will have on soil health, food security and the environment. Stay tuned for more updates from NOVASOIL and find out how they are changing the world.
