The Novasoil website has been designed to provide clear and accessible information to its users. The main sections are listed below:

Partnering

At Novasoil, we believe in the power of collaboration and partnership to drive innovation and create positive change in the agricultural industry. We work with respected organizations, companies and individuals who share our vision of sustainable, technology-driven agriculture.

Through these strategic partnerships, we gain access to diverse expertise, cutting-edge technologies and invaluable networks. Our partners include leading agricultural research institutions, technology providers, government agencies, not-for-profit organizations and industry experts. Together, we are committed to pushing the boundaries of agricultural innovation and driving sustainable solutions that increase productivity, conserve resources and protect the environment.

These collaborations allow us to gain deeper insights into the challenges farmers face, explore new solutions and create more comprehensive and impactful soil health initiatives. By working together, we can accelerate the adoption of new soil health business models, develop scalable solutions and make a significant difference to farmers’ lives and the future of agriculture on a global scale. We are grateful for the support and collaboration of our valued partners and look forward to continued success in our shared mission.

Our sister projects

Sister projects are a range of collaborative initiatives designed to enhance and extend the information and resources offered by the main project. They are usually run-in conjunction with the parent project and are designed to complement its content, providing additional perspectives and knowledge on related topics. By working together, sister projects serve to enrich the overall user experience by providing a richer and more diverse range of resources to access and explore.

InBestSoil: Funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme, this project involves twenty partners from ten countries with different profiles (universities, SMEs, consultancies, farmers and NGOs). The project provides data, evidence, tools and models to assess how investment in soil health can contribute to the transition to long-term resilient and sustainable soil use. It uses six lighthouses and three living labs, offering a total of nine study areas across four biogeographical regions in Europe (Boreal, Continental, Atlantic, Mediterranean) and different land uses (agriculture, forestry, urban, mining) as models for co-creation and co-design.

SoilValues: This project promotes successful business models for soil health, where land managers are incentivized to invest in healthy soils and compensated for non-marketed services. SoilValues will provide an evaluation framework, establish test-beds and communities of practice, develop a toolbox of incentives and policy recommendations, and raise awareness of soil health business models.

The business model for soil health

Soil health is becoming an increasingly important part of sustainable agriculture and companies are recognizing the potential of this growing market. The soil health business model focuses on promoting soil health and fertility through natural methods such as crop rotation, cover crops and reduced tillage. This approach helps to improve soil structure, increase water retention, reduce nutrient run-off and ultimately increase crop yields and profits.

The Soil Health business model is based on the understanding that healthy, high-quality soil is essential for sustainable agriculture. By applying regenerative practices such as reducing the use of synthetic fertilizers and chemicals, building soil organic matter and managing pests through integrated pest management, the Soil Health business model offers a promising path to a more sustainable future for farmers and the environment.

In addition to improving the bottom line for farmers, this business model can open up new markets for agribusinesses. Companies that offer soil health-based products and services, such as organic inputs, cover crop seeds or soil health assessments, have the potential to capture a growing share of the market as more farmers adopt regenerative practices. Overall, the soil health business model is a win-win situation for both farmers and companies. By focusing on soil health, companies can help farmers increase profitability while promoting environmental sustainability and resilience.

Soil health practices

Soil health is a critical component of successful and sustainable agricultural practices. It refers to the ability of soil to function as a living ecosystem, supporting plant and animal life and providing essential ecosystem services.

By maintaining healthy soils, farmers can increase crop productivity, improve soil fertility, reduce the risk of soil erosion and nutrient run-off, and promote biodiversity.

Soil health is determined by a number of factors, including soil structure, nutrient availability, water-holding capacity and microbial diversity. Healthy soils are characterized by a rich and diverse microbial community, which plays a key role in nutrient cycling, organic matter decomposition and disease suppression. In addition, good soil structure allows adequate air and water flow, which is essential for plant growth and overall soil health.

Regenerative practices such as crop rotation, reduced tillage, cover crops and integrated pest management can help maintain or improve soil health over time. By reducing the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, these practices promote a healthier, more balanced soil microbiome, improving soil structure and water-holding capacity. Crop rotation allows farmers to replenish soil nutrients naturally, reducing reliance on chemical inputs and improving soil health.

Overall, promoting soil health is essential for sustainable agricultural practices and long-term ecological resilience. By prioritizing soil health, farmers can improve crop yields, reduce environmental damage and promote biodiversity, contributing to a healthier and more sustainable planet.
