In a collaborative effort among ten European institutions, Evenor\u2011Tech has overseen the release of \u201cSoil health and business models: a review and analysis carried out in the NOVASOIL project<\/a><\/em><\/strong>\u201d in the\u00a0Journal of Applied Life Sciences and Environment<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(Vol.\u202f58, Issue\u202f2, pp.\u202f245\u2013286). This publication, stemming from the NOVASOIL initiative, aims to demonstrate how investing in soil health can drive agricultural innovation and environmental restoration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Research Objectives<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
    \n
  1. Establish and standardise soil health indicators<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 including organic carbon, pH, nutrient levels, compaction and soil biodiversity \u2014 to enable consistent monitoring across Europe.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Assess advanced monitoring technologies<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 such as in\u2011field sensors, satellite remote sensing and UAV drones \u2014 to provide continuous, high\u2011resolution data.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Design and prototype sustainable business models<\/strong>\u00a0that monetise ecosystem services (carbon credits, erosion\u2011reduction premiums and water filtration compensations) via blockchain platforms.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Examine regulatory alignment<\/strong>\u00a0with the CAP 2023\u20132027, the Nature Restoration Regulation and the forthcoming EU Soil Monitoring Law, offering recommendations for policy harmonisation.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Methodology and Approach<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    • Literature review and case analysis<\/strong>: Thirteen European case studies covering agricultural, forestry and land\u2011restoration practices were selected to extract best practices and success metrics.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Deployment of sensors and remote sensing<\/strong>: Portable VNIR spectrometers measured organic carbon and moisture; Sentinel\u20112 imagery (every 15 days) and high\u2011resolution UAV flights mapped erosion and vegetation cover; all data streams feed into a Big Data and AI platform.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Business model prototyping<\/strong>: \u201cPay\u2011for\u2011results\u201d schemes were developed on blockchain to ensure transparency in transactions for carbon credits and ecosystem services, with pilot plots confirming technical and economic feasibility.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Regulatory analysis<\/strong>: A comparative review of European and national policies identified gaps and proposed common indicators and public\u2013private financing mechanisms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Conclusions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      The study reveals that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      • Standardised indicators and continuous monitoring allow for reliable soil health assessments at plot level.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Integrating field technologies, remote sensing and AI platforms delivers an operational dashboard showing validated improvements: a 0.3\u202f% increase in organic carbon and a 15\u202f% reduction in erosion over two years in trial plots.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Ecosystem\u2011service\u2011based business models are viable: participating farmers saw an average 20\u202f% rise in income.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Policy harmonisation is essential: the methodological recommendations set out in the article provide a foundation for the upcoming EU Soil Monitoring Law and inform CAP measures with efficient, verifiable parameters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
