Compaction occurs when soil is compressed and becomes denser, reducing the amount of air and water available to plants and micro-organisms.
Soil compaction is caused by a variety of factors, including heavy machinery traffic on wet soils, overgrazing, over-tillage and lack of crop rotation. Compaction can also get worse over time if nothing is done to reverse it.
To maintain soil health, it is important to minimise compaction and restore soil structure where necessary. One way to do this is to implement sustainable farming practices such as crop rotation, use of cover crops and reduced use of heavy machinery.

Figure 1. Water runoff caused by soil sealing

Crop rotation involves changing the crops grown in a particular area each growing season. This can help prevent soil compaction because different crops have different root systems, which can penetrate to different depths and spread in different ways. This prevents the roots of any one crop from dominating and compacting the soil.
Another sustainable practice to reduce soil compaction is the use of groundcovers. Groundcovers are plants that are grown on the ground between growing seasons and cut to form a protective layer over the soil. This helps reduce soil erosion and compaction, while improving soil structure by adding organic matter and nutrients to the soil.

Reducing the use of heavy machinery can also help prevent soil compaction. If it is necessary to use heavy machinery, measures can be taken to minimise soil damage, such as avoiding working on wet soils and using low-pressure tyres to reduce the footprint on the soil.
In summary, soil compaction can have a negative impact on soil health and reduce crop productivity. To prevent compaction and maintain soil health, sustainable agricultural practices such as crop rotation, use of cover crops and reduced use of heavy machinery should be adopted. These measures can maintain soil health and improve agricultural production in the long term.

Soil compaction is a problem that affects the health of soils, reducing their ability to support plant and animal life […]

[10,4
20,14
post-1303","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-blog","category-news","tag-sealing","tag-soil
